Matthew 12:40&41
"40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
41 The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here."
We’ve been studying God’s call to Jonah to preach repentance to the violent Assyrians. What an amazing story and how perfectly God’s plan succeeded.
In Matthew 12, the scribes and Pharisees demanded a miraculous sign from Jesus. He answered that the only sign they would receive was “the sign of Jonah.” A direct prophecy of His death, burial, and resurrection.
Just as Jonah spent three days and nights in the great fish, Jesus would be in “the heart of the earth.” Though not a literal 72 hours, Jewish reckoning counted any part of a day as a full day. Jesus was buried Friday evening and rose Sunday morning, fulfilling the prophecy.
This sign confirms Jesus’ identity and mission. The pagan Ninevites repented at Jonah’s preaching with no miracles beyond his arrival. Yet Jesus’ generation witnessed far greater miracles, teaching, and the promise of resurrection and still many refused to believe.
Jesus is greater than Jonah: Jonah delivered a message; Jesus is the Savior. The repentant Ninevites will stand as witnesses against those who reject God’s final revelation in Christ.
We can relate to Jonah’s stubbornness and flaws, and we stand amazed that God uses imperfect people like us. But may we never be like the scribes and Pharisees; refusing to acknowledge Jesus as Lord and Savior.
