sware to your fathers

Joshua 1:6
"Be STRONG and of a good COURAGE: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them."

Joshua has a HUGE task ahead of him; take back their Promised Land! In yesterday's verse, God told him, "I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee." WOW! That's great encouragement! Joshua needs it for the formidable challenge ahead. The people that are in the Promised Land now have armies and some of them are GIANTS!

The Promised Land doesn't belong to the people squatting there, it belongs to the Israelites. It is GOD speaking in today's verse, "which I SWARE unto their fathers to give them." God first promised the land to Abram (Abraham) in Genesis 12. God told him that he would be the father of many nations. And he was. Next, God reaffirmed His promise to Abraham’s son Isaac (Genesis 26:3) and then to Isaac’s son Jacob (Genesis 28:13). Next, God saved His chosen people from the bonds of slavery in Egypt, promising to lead them to the Promised Land! And, now Joshua gets the honor and privilege to lead the Israelites to their destination. He just needs to be STRONG and COURAGEOUS!

Acts 2:7&8 "7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? 8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?" The Holy Ghost is the only way this happens. They were very surprised to be hundreds and, some cases, thousands of miles from "home" and hearing their language spoken! It was astonishing! Appreciate that these devout Jewish people whose families had been carried away from Israel generations before. Taken in captivity by armies that invaded and conquered Israel.
