James 3:3 & 4
"3 Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
4 Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth."
In our studies we have turned our attention to the book of James. Written by the half-brother of Jesus. He became an apostle after he had seen and believed the Lord post-resurrection! We started with from chapter three, verse one, which has some familiar advice like; with the great honor to lead and guide comes greater responsibility and accountability. Heaven forbid our faults and shortcomings would hurt the Gospel message and the work of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Today's verse we ease into the more targeted subject of staying on course; "Behold, we put BITS in the horses' mouths, that they may OBEY us; and we turn about their whole body. Behold also the ships, which though they be so GREAT, and are driven of FIERCE winds, yet are they turned about with a VERY SMALL HELM, whithersoever the governor listeth." Big horses and big ships are commanded and controlled by small things; bits and helms (rudders.) It's really amazing to consider how much power this points of control have. And, what a service these tools of guidance provide to the greater good of the world!
We are also continuing our God's Garden series. This week's featured produce is leeks. The leek is a vegetable, closely related to onions, garlic, shallots, scallions and chives. In contrast to these relatives leeks don’t form a bulb. The edible parts of the plant are the white base and the stem while the dark, green sheaths at the top can be discarded.
Leeks originated in the Middle East and the Mediterranean region. They can be prepared and eaten in much the same way as people eat onions. The flavor is milder than onions. They are also extremely healthy and have numerous health benefits.
Leeks also reminds us of "LEAKS!"
