Matthew 2:14 & 15
"14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:
15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son."
This week we continue our study Children of the Heavenly Father focused on an event that took place when Jesus was a baby. The narrative picks up right after the Wisemen came to pay homage to the Messiah. The evil King Herod saw this as an opportunity to eliminate the threat to his rule. Herod sent soldiers to kill ALL BABIES under two years old. Imagine the horror. Very evil plans.
GOD warns Joseph in a dream; "Arise, and take the young Child and His mother, and FLEE into EGYPT, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to DESTROY HIM." The Holy Family is running for their lives.
Today's verse "When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: And was there until the death of Herod: THAT IT MIGHT BE FULFILLED which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my Son." This language is recorded in Hosea 11:1. It speaks of God's calling His people out of Egypt, with Moses. See Exodus 4:22-23. We can also see it's fulfilled in His calling Jesus from Egypt. We cannot suppose that the passage in Hosea was a prophecy of the Messiah. It is evidently used by Matthew only because the language is appropriate to express the event. Still amazing!
