John 14:4&5
"4 And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.
5 Thomas saith unto Him, Lord, we know not whither Thou goest; and how can we know the way?"
This week we are studying Solus Christus = Christ alone. Our reading is from the Gospel of John, chapter 14. These verses record Jesus’ final teaching to the eleven remaining disciples in the upper room on the night before His crucifixion. Jesus calls them to be courageous. He places Himself on the same level of trust as God the Father. He gives them reasons for hope, saying they will have a place in heaven.
In today’s verses Jesus tells His disciples they possess the necessary knowledge to follow Him to the Father’s house. This statement serves as a theological setup for the ensuing dialogue, emphasizing that the path to God is not a physical journey but a spiritual relationship centered on Christ.
Thomas, however, interprets Jesus’ words as directions to a physical location, failing to grasp that the “way” is not a route to be mapped but a person to be known. This exchange highlights the disciples’ current misunderstanding, which Jesus immediately corrects in verse 6 by identifying Himself as “the way, and the truth, and the life,” thereby revealing that knowing Him is synonymous with knowing the path to the Father.
