Mark 12:33
"And to love Him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices."

Read that last phrase again if you need to: "more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices."

In today’s verse a scribe affirms that loving God with all one’s heart, understanding, soul, and strength, and loving one’s neighbor as oneself, is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices. This statement summarizes the core of the Law. Genuine devotion and ethical love outweigh external religious rituals.

The verse highlights several key theological points:

Supremacy of love. Heartfelt obedience is superior to ceremonial law. This echoes the prophetic word that God desires mercy and knowledge of Him more than ritual (Hosea 6:6).

Comprehensive devotion. Loving God requires the totality of one’s being: affections, intellect, and physical strength. No part of life is exempt.

Vertical and horizontal love. Love for God is bound to love for others. True worship overflows into tangible care for neighbors.

Fulfillment of the Law. By placing love above sacrifice, the verse points to ethical monotheism as the goal of Scripture. Jesus’ own sacrifice would later fulfill the need for animal offerings.

Jesus summed up the Old Testament law in two brief commands. Those commands are not rungs on a ladder we climb. They are a pattern to follow. Jesus is showing the way: wash one another’s feet. Stoop to serve others in humility and charity.

2 Kings 14:25 "He restored the coast of Israel from the entering of Hamath unto the sea of the plain, according to the word of the LORD God of Israel, which he spake by the hand of His servant Jonah, the son of Amittai, the prophet, which was of Gathhepher." We’re continuing our series on God’s calling of His people. Last week we saw how God transformed the Apostle Paul—from zealous enemy to greatest champion. A clear theme is emerging: those God calls often start with reluctance. This week we meet one of the most famous reluctant prophets, Jonah. Jonah’s first recorded prophecy appears in 2 Kings 14:25. He foretold that King Jeroboam II would restore Israel’s borders from Hamath to the Dead Sea. This prophecy came true, bringing a season of prosperity to the northern kingdom.
