Son of David

Mark 12:35-40
"35 And Jesus answered and said, while He taught in the temple, How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David?
36 For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on My right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.
37 David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son? And the common people heard Him gladly.
38 And he said unto them in His doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces,
39 And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts:
40 Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation."

In today's verses Jesus teaches in the Temple during Passion Week on two themes: the Messiah’s identity and the scribes’ hypocrisy.

The Messiah’s Divine Identity (vv. 35-37)
Jesus challenges the scribes’ view by asking how the Messiah can be both David’s son and David’s Lord. Citing Psalm 110:1, He notes that David, by the Holy Spirit, calls the Messiah “Lord” showing the Messiah is not merely a human descendant but possesses divine status greater than David’s, seated at God’s right hand.

Warning Against Hypocrisy (vv. 38-40)
Jesus warns the crowd against the scribes’ false piety and pride. They seek public recognition through long robes, marketplace greetings, and seats of honor in synagogues and at feasts. Worse, they exploit widows by devouring their houses while using long prayers as a cover for greed; they will face greater judgment.

I will make you

Matthew 4:19&20 "19 And He saith unto them, Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men. 20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed Him." In our "Follow Me" series, we study Jesus calling His disciples in the Gospel of Matthew. By the Sea of Galilee, a thriving fishing hub, Jesus saw Simon and Andrew casting nets as humble fishermen. His disciples were ordinary workers, not wealthy or educated elites. Jesus approached them and said, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." Remarkably, they immediately left their jobs to follow Him. This brief exchange conveys a profound truth: Jesus says, "I will make you." Only God can transform us to accomplish His purpose. We should often pray, "Help me, God," seeking Jesus' guidance to follow His plan for our lives.
