John 21:23&24
"23 Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?
24 This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true."
Our study of Jesus’ teachings on following Him will conclude with these last verses from John’s Gospel, where Jesus restores Peter after his denial and foretells his martyrdom. In a candid moment, Peter asks about John’s fate, and Jesus rebukes him, urging him to focus on his own path.
The lesson is clear: our duty is to follow Jesus, not to speculate about others’ destinies. Despite dangers, Peter and John faithfully answered Jesus’ call to “Follow Me,” spreading the Gospel for future generations. Though John escaped martyrdom, he endured imprisonment, proving his steadfastness.
Verse 23 corrects a rumor that John would not die, clarifying Jesus’ words and emphasizing that John’s fate was irrelevant to Peter’s calling. Verse 24 affirms the Gospel’s authenticity, confirming John as the eyewitness author whose testimony is true, serving as a seal of reliability.
Praise the Lord!
