HUMILITY

James 4:10
"Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up."

We are learning! The old-fashioned word "EDIFY" is a little like education. We need to be educated as well as be educational for others. We also learned that the GREATEST commandment is to LOVE GOD and to LOVE OTTERS! 😉 (If you know, you know. If you don't, read yesterday's devotional.)

Today's verse brings up the discipline of "humility." Not to be confused with humiliation. Humiliation is a negative experience involving a loss of dignity and self-respect, often imposed by external circumstances or actions of others. In contrast, HUMILITY is a POSITIVE trait characterized by a modest view of one's own importance and a willingness to acknowledge one's limitations and the value of OTHERS.

Luke 1:51-53 "51 He hath shewed strength with His arm; He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. 52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. 53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away." This is Mary's Magnificat. Beginning with verse forty-six Mary's responds to Elizabeth’s blessing is EPIC! In this poem Mary praises GOD for His blessing to her and His faithfulness to Israel.  Mary's Magnificat also highlights a series of reversals in which the proud are humbled and the humble are exalted!
