John 14:8-10
"8 Philip saith unto Him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us.
9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known Me, Philip? he that hath seen Me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
10 Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of Myself: but the Father that dwelleth in Me, He doeth the works."
This week we are focusing on the name "EVERLASTING FATHER" from the writing of Isaiah about the Messiah. The Gospel of John is great for teaching about GOD. We have read foundational teachings about Jesus’ divinity and His relationship with God the Father. Jesus claimed equality with God the Father, asserting a unity of power and authority. This is central to the doctrine of the Holy Trinity.
Today's verses record another instance when Jesus stated His divinity. Jesus is the visible representation of God’s presence and character. In seeing Jesus, the disciples (and by extension, believers) are seeing God the Father. Jesus is not just a human being who has a special relationship with God; He is God Himself, manifest in human flesh. Philip’s request was based on a desire to see God directly, but Jesus shows that this is not necessary. Instead, faith in Jesus as the revelation of God is sufficient. In seeing Jesus, believers are seeing the Father, and through faith in Jesus, they can have a direct relationship with God. His revelation of God is complete and sufficient. Believers do not need to seek additional revelations or experiences to know God; Jesus’ presence and teachings are enough.
