John 8:9
"9 And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst."
"LEFT ALONE."
Jesus told them "He that is WITHOUT SIN among you, let him first cast a stone at her." The scribes and Pharisees had drug in this unfortunate woman they caught in the act of adultery. (The man is conspicuously absent.) They were pressuring Jesus to say she needs to be stoned according to Mosaic law. Jesus bowed down and wrote something in the dirt. We don't know what. The motivation of the scribes and Pharisees was not glorifying God. They had their own selfish agenda. They were abusing the Law, this poor woman, and the community by their actions. All just to catch Jesus in some legal and philosophical trap.
AND! It did not work. While the scribes and Pharisees were a FIERCE opposition, they were also intellectually honorable. They were conscious of their own sins and most likely aware of their peers' sins. No one is without sin. They knew they were guilty too! They could NOT cast a stone with a clear conscience. The most prestigious among them left first. And, they all left. Giving everyone a clear idea of how exceedingly corrupt people are.
