Luke 10:29&30
"29 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?
30 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead."
We are paying attention to the questions Jesus asks as He tells one of His most famous parables. An expert in Old Testament law asked, "What shall I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus flipped the question back to the expert by asking, "What is written in the law? how readest thou?" Or, "you can answer your own question." So, to speak.
The expert recites The Shama. He did NOT share his interpretation of the law. He did NOT offer any expert insights on the subject. The Shema is commonly known and used. This "expert" has NOT impressed anyone, so far. And, in today's verse, he asks another question, which he should have known the answer. "But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And WHO is my neighbour?"
To answer this question, Jesus begins the parable of the Good Samaritan. "A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead."
