John 8:7&8
"7 So when they continued asking Him, He lifted up Himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.
8 And again He stooped down, and wrote on the ground."
Don't miss the tension and stress on display here. Jesus came to the Temple to teach. The scribes and Pharisees have drug in a unfortunate woman they caught in the act of adultery. (The man is conspicuously absent.) They are pressuring Jesus to say she needs to be stoned according to Mosiac law. Everyone needs to take a deep breath and count to ten.
Jesus bowed down and wrote something in the dirt. We don't know what. Possibly, it was a stalling tactic to give everyone some time to think about it. Maybe cool down the emotions. "So when they continued asking Him, He lifted up Himself, and said unto them, He that is WITHOUT SIN among you, let him first cast a stone at her. And again He stooped down, and wrote on the ground." The motivation of the scribes and Pharisees was not glorifying God. They had their own selfish agenda. They were abusing the Law, this poor woman, and the community by their actions. All just to catch Jesus in some legal and philosophical trap.
