Matthew 17:5&6
"5 While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye Him.
6 And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid."
When Jesus took three of His Disciples up to the mountain top to show them who He really was, the two wing men who show up to help are both there based on GOD'S Laws. Moses who first received GOD'S Ten Commandments. Elijah the prophet who is a most zealous restorer and defender of the law. As we study and follow the golden thread of redemption, we have to study the Law and the Gospel. If you are only hearing about the Gospel, you only have half the story.
But wait! There's more! In today's verses we hear the voice from heaven, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye Him." The same words we heard at Jesus's Baptism! With the added advice of "listen to Him." It is impossible to understand the sensory experience the three Disciples had. It is easy to say it was unforgettable and life-changing. And it was terrifying. If we can read this series of events, keeping all the layers of meaning in mind, we might find it frightful too. And that is good. Our world needs to FEAR GOD.
