Exodus 1:17&18
"17 But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.
18 And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?"
Shiphrah and Puah are the midwives named in yesterday's verses. The king of Egypt, Pharoah, is never named. Who he was has been forgotten by history. What he did is remembered. He brutally oppressed the Israelites. Enslaved them, abused and tortured them, mentally and physically. In the sequence of events we are studying, his monstrous plan is to have the midwives KILL all the baby boys as they are being born. It's a terrible evil.
So terrible that Shiphrah and Puah are unwilling to do it! Today's verses; "But the midwives FEARED God, and did NOT, as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive. And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?" The midwives lied to Pharoah to cover for the heroic deeds they did. And, the Holy Scriptures went on to say that "God dealt WELL with the midwives..."
By the end of this chapter of Exodus, Pharoah resorts to plan b, ordering his people to throw the Israelites' baby boys into the Nile River to DROWN! We can see that some people will let NOTHING stop them from achieving their goals.
