John 4:11&12
"11 The woman saith unto Him, Sir, Thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast Thou that living water?
12 Art Thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?"
This woman at the well is caught up litrally thinking about drawing water from the well. And, in her question she reveals that Samaritans shared many beliefs with the Jewish people. They have many shared ancestors, like Jacob. And, it is fascinating that she emphasized this fact. This water well has abundantly provided water for MANY generations. Jacob had dug this well in his own purchased plot. So that he was not dependent on neighbors who were at times hostile. This water well is evidence of an UNBROKEN continuity in the history of this place. Which is the point of pain for the people because their history as a people was BROKEN. Kind of a community trauma coming out in her casual conversation.
Too often when we are speaking to others there is this communication breakdown. We might be speaking spiritually and they are hearing very materially. If we can listen carefully we will hear them talk about their more sensitive issues in a round about way...
