John 4:13-18
"16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.
17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:
18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly."
This woman at the well is litrally thinking about drawing water from the well. This water well is evidence of an UNBROKEN continuity in the history of this place. Which is the point of pain for the Samaritan people because their history was BROKEN. Kind of a community trauma coming out in her casual conversation.
Next, Jesus explains that He is talking about "water springing up into everlasting life." She is still thinking about drinking water. Then Jesus directed the conversation into a more personal direction; "Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither. The woman answered and said, I have NO HUSBAND. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have NO HUSBAND: For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly."
This moment would GRAB anyone's attention! Jesus knows her heart and knows her personal life story. He is not rejecting her. He is talking with her. Jesus gets to the truth. Everytime. Like this woman, we are all sinners. If we will talk with Jesus we will get to the TRUTH and He will not reject us. He will forgive us. Even the Samaritans that are not in the "Chosen" people club.
