John 13:6-8
"6 Then cometh He to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto Him, Lord, dost Thou wash my feet?
7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
8 Peter saith unto Him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with Me."
We are studying Experiencing GOD. We have returned to the Gospel of John, chapter thirteen, when Jesus has gathered together His Disciples for the feast of the passover. Jesus KNOWS He will soon be crucified. He wants to prepare His followers for the tasks He has planned for them. The next few minutes are going to blow their minds but nothing compared to the next few days!
Our Lord and Savior, the Creator of the Universe, wants to get on His hands and knees and washs the dusty and tired feet of His friends. This job was one that a servant or a slave would do. Jesus did this menial task. This was the Disciples Rabbi, Teacher, Master and Lord. Stripped down, on the ground, at their feet. Washing their feet and drying them with the towel He was wearing. It's enough to make your head spin.
And, it was too much for Peter to take; "...and Peter saith unto Him, Lord, dost Thou wash my feet?" It was not supposed to be done; the Master washing the feet of the students! It's shocking! Possibly offensive to Peter and others. This is NOT the way the world of man works. If anything, the students should be washing the Master's feet!
"Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. Peter saith unto Him, Thou shalt NEVER WASH my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast NO PART with Me." Here Peter is firm with Jesus and Jesus is stronger in His response to Peter. I perceive that there is a principle here; we need to let Jesus wash us. If we don't we will not be in His Kingdom for all eternity. We want to be washed by Jesus. We want to be baptized. We want to confess our sins. We want to partake in Holy Communion. If we can do something to bring us closer to Jesus; we need to do it!
