Matthew 11:2&3
"2 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?"
Jesus said that John the Baptist is the GREATEST prophet. And, there are more than a few prophets. As we studied over the last week; John stood up to the Sadducees and Pharisees. He severely criticizes them. Giving them a message filled with fire and brimstone! Telling them they will be consumed in GOD'S judgment by the UNQUENCHABLE FIRE.
It's this BOLD and BRASH person that we continue to study this week. We turn a few chapters forward in the Gospel of Matthew to the point when John the Baptizer was being held in prison by the authorities. He had condemned King Herod for divorcing his wife and then marrying Herodias, the divorced wife of Herod Antipas' half-brother Philip.
In today's verses John is sitting in prison hearing reports of Jesus's ministry and having doubts; "Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, And said unto Him, Art Thou He that should come, or do we look for another?" Understand this. John sends sent two of his people to Jesus to ask His if He was the Messiah??? It doesn't make sense. This was the one thing John was the most sure of. Was prison messing with his mind? Is he trying to spark some response from Jesus that will help his situation?
