Luke 24:25-28
"25 Then He said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into His glory?
27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, He expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning Himself.
28 And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and He made as though he would have gone further."
We are on the road to Emmaus with Cleopas and one other unnamed Disciple. The Resurrected Jesus has joined them BUT He is not revealing Himself to them, YET! Jesus plays "dumb" and gets them to explain and they provide a good summary of what has happened.
In today's verses we read Jesus's response to them; "O FOOL'S, and SLOW of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into His GLORY?" The word for "fools" might be more aptly translated as "silly." Which would make it sound less harsh. We have to wonder what is going through Cleopas and friend's mind as this stranger is talking to them this way? And, we can only imagine Jesus's frustration having taught these two so much already and now to see that they don't get it! He had taught them prophetic words about His own suffering and death, as well as to sovereignty and triumph. And, here at the moment of truth; they don't get it!!!
And, Jesus gives them yet another lesson; "And beginning at Moses and ALL the PROPHETS, He expounded unto them in ALL the SCRIPTURES the things concerning HIMSELF." Do you see it now??? Is the light bulb going off above their heads?? It is comical how slow the Disciples are to understand what they are experiencing. And, that's just it, they are in the middle of the action and we have the perspective from time and benefit from the Holy Bible!
For Cleopas and friend the lesson is coming to the end; "And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and He made as though he would have gone further." The Stranger is going to continue on His journey...
