Matthew 5:38
"Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:"
We are almost through the Lent season. We have learned some awesome lessons about our Lord and Savior. His mission and ministry has us lifting high the cross to this very day. Our FAITH is given to us by the Holy Ghost. We NOW have GOD with us in our innermost lives and we get to call Him; "Father." We "are all the children of God BY FAITH in Christ Jesus!"
Today we return to the Gospel of Matthew for some more challenging teaching from Jesus. In today's verse we get the standard that the world is familiar with; "Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:" This is a high standard for justice from the book of Exodus, chapter twenty-one, verse twenty-four. This implies equity and ballace. It's not revenge or payback, it's what's fare. This wording has a barbaric ring in our ears we are used to seeing a physical penalty replaced by monetary payments. We are much more civilized. 😉
This judicial philosophy is debated all through history and received popular twist in the 1971 movie version of the musical “Fiddler in the Roof.”
"FIRST MAN: We should defend ourselves. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.
TEVYE: Very good. And that way, the whole world will be blind and toothless."
It's even more interesting modern history of this quote can be read here...
