Matthew 1:18-20
"18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with Child of the Holy Ghost.
19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.
20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost."
Our study series leading up to Easter is titled "Lift High the Cross." So far, this week, we studied the parable of ten virgins parable told by Jesus to teach His followers to be READY for His return. His Advent. The rest of this week we will continue reading in the Gospel of Matthew, BUT looking at the Advent of Jesus through the Virgin Mary and Joseph.
Today's verses; "Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with Child of the HOLY GHOST. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily." Engagment at this time was to be long and legally binding. Mary is pregnant before their wedding. WHAT to DO? The Law says she is to be stoned. Joseph doesn't want to harm Mary. He truly loves her and wants the best for her. Even as his own heart is breaking. 💔
This is a very difficult decision for Joseph. "But while he thought on these things, behold, The Angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is CONCEIVED in her is of the HOLY GHOST." The baby growing in Mary's womb is not of human conception! This is beyond incredible! It has to be a HUGE relief to Joseph. His heart no longer has to be broken, but his life will not get any easier. Joseph will not only face the challenge of raising the Son of God, he will also have stand up for his wife in front of disbelieving family and friends.
Joseph was a GREAT man.
