WE ARE ABLE

Matthew 20:22
"But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto Him, We are able."

We are studying God's Garden, this week we are looking at the Squash and it reminds us that there are somethings we NEED TO "SQUASH." Squash as in suppress, stifle, or subdue. Like the type of ambition and motivation to get ahead of our peers. As demonstrated by Salome, the wife of Zebedee and mother of John the beloved and James the great (two of Jesus's Disciples.) She asked Jesus to make her sons His right and left hand men. Putting them ahead of all their peers.

But, wait! There is more... today's verse has James and John and their mom, thinking of a THRONE and a place of privilege. We like to think we are better than others and deserve our own THRONE. But we are not as good as God, and Jesus is talking about His place on the cross. Something no mom would want for her sons. "But Jesus answered and said, Ye KNOW NOT what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto Him, WE ARE ABLE."

We like to think we are ABLE to earn our gifts from GOD. This idea also needs to be SQUASHED. We can flip our thinking around; because of God's great gift of GRACE to us we want to do good for Him.

God’s patience

2 Peter 3:9 "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." God did not immediately punish King Solomon when he allowed his foreign wives to build altars for false gods. Despite multiple compromises, God remained patient. Over time, Solomon’s endorsement of idolatry defied God’s covenant, leading to divine judgment, including the loss of the kingdom for his son. Some mistake God’s patience for indifference or inaction, but He follows His plan in His timing. If our nation, culture, church, or we ourselves stray like Solomon, we can repent and return to God’s path. And, should do so sooner than later! Amen!
