1 Samuel 17:36-38
"36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
37 David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.
38 And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail."
Here young David sounds like the precocious teenager who doesn't know what they don't know. David is demanding to go out as Israel's champion and fight a 10 ft tall, trained and experienced fighter. A seasoned veteran who would be able to take on a boy, NO PROBLEM. We know how the story unfolds so it is HARD for us to really appreciate how ludicrous it is for a boy to take on a WARRIOR! It would look like the brave man in China in 1989 who stood in front of the tank, stopping it in Tiananmen Square.
No One in Israel dared take on Goliath. They were all very AFRAID. Except David, today's verses; "Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as ONE of THEM, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God. David said moreover, The LORD that DELIVERED ME out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will DELIVER ME out of the hand of this Philistine." All the times David was protecting his flock from lions and bears was training for this very moment!
While David's courage is outstanding, it is more amazing that King Saul is agreeable to sending this young man to his certain death... "And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee. And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail." We almost want to trust that Saul is inspired by the Holy Ghost but then he insisted that David protect himself with the armor of men, not the armor of GOD.
