1 Samuel 3:2 & 3
"2 And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see;
3 And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep;"
What an incredible time this was!
God answered Hannah's prayers. She raised Samuel as a Nazarite and took him to the high priest, Eli, in the Temple to live, learn and work. Samuel is also from the tribe of Levi and off to a good start on his way to become a Priest for Israel.
While there was NO prophecy or revelation from God at this time, Eli and Samuel are living in God's Temple with the Lamp of God AND the Ark of the Covenant!!! Today's verse; "And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see;" There seems to be a combination of things happening here; Eli is growing old and we can infer that his sight is failing and it is late in the evening, they are tired and going to bed.
Samuel is no doubt helping Eli with many things around the Temple. In this particular instance he is making sure the Lamp of God does NOT go out during the night. "And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep;" He will need to check on it during the course of the night...
