Luke 15:29-32
"29 And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends:
30 But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf.
31 And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine.
32 It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found."
We are studying the Gospel of Luke, chapter fifteen where there are THREE PRODIGALS! Look at the definition of "Prodigal;" spending money or resources freely and recklessly; WASTEFULLY EXTRAVAGANT.
JESUS tells this parable about the TWO Sons. The younger son was DISRESPECTFUL and WASTED his inheritance. When he returned to his father's house, his father RUNS out to greet him and WELCOMS him BACK!!! All the years away the father's love never wained. The father doesn't lecture his younger son, instead he celebrates! Hel REJOICES that his LOST SON is found! The father wants everyone to celebrate with him!
Then the elder son returned from working in the field and asked one of servants what's all the CELEBRATING for? When he hears it's because his brother has COME HOME; "he was ANGRY, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him." The father comes out to talk to him.
And, in today's verses, the elder son is freely and reckless with the praises for himself and WASTEFULLY EXTRAVAGANT with his criticism of his father and brother. "And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I SERVE thee, neither transgressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou NEVER gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends: BUT as soon as this THY SON was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf." The elder son is definitely rude to his father when he chews him out. This son also thinks he is owed something. People often think they are better than others. We think we are well and have it together. Self righteous like this elder brother. But, like him; we don't.
The father patiently listened to him son and then said; "Son, thou art ever with me, and ALL that I have iS THINE. It was meet that we should make merry, and BE GLAD: for this thy brother was dead, and is ALIVE AGAIN; and was lost, and is FOUND."
Like this father in the parable; God comes to His children. God doesn't wait for His children to get right. He goes to them and helps them. Comes to you where you are. We are Children of the Heavenly Father and he is EXTRAVAGANTLY GENEROUS with all of us.
