Genesis 25:33 & 34
"33 And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.
34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright."
Esau trades EVERYTHING that was his Father's for A BOWL of soup!!! Did he NOT value his own BIRTHRIGHT??? Esau said; "what profit shall this birthright do to me?" At the end of today's verses we learn; "thus Esau DESPISED his birthright."
While it was a VERY POOR choice to trade his birthright for soup; when we keep reading we will get the idea that Jacob tricked Esua. And, Esua will carry a grudge for decades and his descendants will continue the SIBLING RIVALRY for MANY generations. The Edomites, Esua's descendents will always be trouble for the Israelites. Their interactions were chariterized by enmity and many times outright hostility.
Like many of the situations in the Holy Scriptures this is a CAUTIONARY EXAMPLE. We are NOT supposed to be like Jacob and Esau. We should not let RIVALRY ruin our relationship with our SIBLINGS, or anyone else! We need to value people more than your own ego.
It is this very human struggling thar Jesus comes to redeem! You and I have rivals and out of the broken relationships God will bring healing.
